Illinois State University's annual Veterans Day Ceremony will be held on Friday, November 9th, at noon in Bowling and Billiards Center.
The indoor portion of the ceremony will include a guest speaker and the outdoor portion will be held at the flagpole with the playing of taps and the laying of flowers.
Veterans are invited to pick up a commemorative yellow ribbon in Moulton Hall and/or at the entrance of the Bowling and Billiards Center from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Judy Curtis, assistant in the University Registrar and organizer of the ceremony, said the event usually draws a large number of people. "I couldn't give you a number," said Curtis.
She said that students usually attend as well as veterans from on and off campus.
"Those who have family members serving overseas may come in support," Curtis said.
Captain Jim Hannigan of the military science department said ROTC members who do not have class or work will be attending the event.
"We are encouraging cadets to attend," Hannigan said.
Hannigan said that Lieutenant Col. Eugene Snyman will be the "voice of the service." He will be introducing the guest speaker, Sgt. Carrie Dunn, who has come back from Iraq.
The ROTC will also be involved in the event by the Color Guard leading the audience to the flagpole on the Quad while Taps is being played.
Veterans Services, Illinois State University Army ROTC, Office of University Registrar, Chi Gamma Iota and Xi Gamma Iota sponsor the Veterans Day Ceremony. The ceremony has been taking place for several years. "When I was a student, we were doing it," Hannigan said. The event is open to the public and free of charge. Refreshments will be served.
