The Bloomington-Normal chapter of the Arthritis Foundation will host its 19th annual Jingle Bell 5K Run/Walk this Sunday as part of a nation-wide effort to raise awareness regarding the disease. The subdivisions located near the Chateau of Bloomington will serve as the site at the start of the race, which will end on the Constitution Trail, according to Craig Rogers, McLean County branch director of the Arthritis Foundation.
"There's a 5K run and a 5K fun walk on the Constitution Trail," Rogers said. "The 5K [run] goes through the subdivisions over by the Chateau and it ends on the Constitution Trail."
The event will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, on Veterans Day with registration taking place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
"Individuals can come out the day of and register," Rogers said. "We have around 80 [teams] registered, which is great, it's a great community event."
A good portion of those 80 teams registered is set to include the 26 individual teams from Dr. Bill Semlak's small group communication class working to bring together students, faculty, staff and surrounding community members to join in and support the cause.
"Our individual team has a fundraising goal of $500," Kathren Sammis, a sophomore communication studies major and team captain of the ISU Jinglebirds, said. "We're about $100 shy of completing that goal as of today."
As the final project for the class, the group which consists of seven students and one faculty member (Dr. Semlak) started fundraising approximately four weeks ago, according to Sammis. "We created a Facebook group to incorporate different types of communication media," Sammis said. "We have 75 members from 21 different schools."
Through the group's efforts, information was sent to family and friends who can also post stories about their experiences involving the disease as well share information regarding the Arthritis Foundation.
"There's a link to a Web site we created through the Arthritis Foundation so you can [click and] donate with a credit card," Sammis said.
As for the actual event, the ISU Jinglebirds plan to visually represent their school as well as their supporters. "We had group t-shirts made to try and support a uniform feel for the team," Sammis said. "We're getting just the individual bells for each individual donation we got to signify those who donated but couldn't participate."
According to Rogers, the Bloomington-Normal chapter of the Arthritis Foundation is aiming for a fundraising goal of $65,000 this year.
"The majority [of the money] stays for programs and services we offer to the community," Rogers said. "A good portion of it goes to research for the cure."
