Student Environmental Action Coalition
Cynthia Foster
Issue date: 11/8/07 Section: Campus
The Student Environmental Action Coalition is concerned about saving the planet by making people aware of their impact on it.
"We are looking for ways to involve everyone on campus, because everyone can do something to help out," Chuck Armour, a junior economics major, said.
"We want to make sure that what we do doesn't affect future generations," Melissa Roe, a junior environmental health major, said.
Informing students about environmental issues is one of our goals, Armour said.
Armour and Roe said one person really can make a difference.
"We need everyone to give it at least a split-second thought before throwing something away - can I reuse it, can I recycle it, can someone else use it," Armour said.
Roe said one of Student Environmental Action Coalition's big campaigns is to make people more aware about recycling.
"We will be starting a campaign called 'Sexy Recycling.' There will be a photo competition with prizes for people to submit photos of themselves recycling," Roe said.
Funny photos can also be submitted, Roe added. The contest will be launched on Facebook and flyers will be posted in time for American Recycles Day on Nov. 15.
"We want people to think about recycling and maybe this will make it more likely for people to recycle if they see that it's cool," Roe said.
Another goal of the campaign is to provide information about the importance of recycling.
"We want to do a program called 'Recycle Buddies,' where people will go around and look in the classrooms for things that are recyclable, and get them recycled," Roe said.
Student Environmental Action Coalition has plans to work with ISU about environmental issues.
"We want to work in conjunction with the Green Team to try and get renewable energy, and better recycling, especially outdoors," Roe said.
Student Environmental Action Coalition is also involved in Fair Trade.
"Fair Trade is where you have people purchase a certified product. So that people making the product, usually from third world countries, are getting a fair wage for what they're producing," Roe explained.
"It's also better for the environment, too," Roe added.
Roe said Student Environmental Action Coalition is not all about work. "We always have a lot of fun. We are serious about things, but we also make sure we have a good time while we're doing things," Roe said.
Roe and Armour said they want to break the stereotype Student Environmental Action Coalition is a hippie organization.
"We are pretty cool," Roe said.
Student Environmental Action Coalition meets at 8:00 p.m. each Monday in Felmley Hall, room 209.
