The Redbirds defeated Western Illinois 142-101 Friday at home. Then ISU beat host Butler 188-42 and Youngstown State 168-69 on Saturday.
Head Swimming coach Steve Paska thought the team had a solid weekend.
"Overall, I think we had a solid weekend," Paska said. "The meet against Western was very exciting; every single event was very competitive. I was very impressed how the girls performed, in less then 24 hours from the end of the western meet, against Butler and Youngstown State. The whole team performed consistently through the whole weekend."
On Friday in front of a home crowd, the Redbirds swam past Western Illinois 142-101. ISU swimming was led by senior Christine Steinbach, who won both 500-and-1000- yard freestyle, sophomore Lindsay Dinkelman, who won the 100-yard breaststroke, and senior Tracy Deyell, who won the 400-yard individual medley.
Senior Katie Janonis led the divers as she placed first in the 1 meter with a score of 241.09 and 3 meter dive with a score of 248.25. Sophomore Liza Perrino finished second in both events and freshman Corrie Heine placed third in both events.
ISU then traveled to Butler on Saturday to take on host Butler and Youngstown State. In the tri-meet, ISU defeated Butler 188-42 and Youngstown State 168-69.
Freshman Amy Schaefer won the 200-yard butterfly and the 500-yard freestyle, Dinkelman won the 200-yard breaststroke, Gomberg won the 100-yard butterfly, senior Valerie Zaleski won the 100-yard freestyle, sophomore Catharine Danenhower won the 200-yard individual medley, senior Katie Borkovec won the 50-yard freestyle, Deyell won the 200-yard freestyle, and Steinbach won the 1650-yard freestyle.
Coach Paska thinks that the seniors set the tone for the rest of the team.
"When the four senior captains, Deyell, Borkovec, Zaleski and Steinbach, lead by example like that, it's a coach's dream," Paska said. "When the people that are expected to be your leaders, in the water and out of the water, perform like that it only helps put everybody else at ease knowing that they are reliable, dependable and their actions sometimes do speak louder than their words."
ISU divers were again led by Janonis, who won the 1 meter with a 239.05 and the 3 meter with a score of 221.87. Perrino placed second in both events again and Heine placed third in the 3 meter dive. Head diving coach Phil Hoffmann was pleased with the groups overall performance.
"I was impressed with how the divers competed as a whole," Hoffmann said. "Each one of the divers had a bright point in their performances this past weekend. The performance of Katie Janonis, Liza Perrino and Corrie Heine really helps to build confidence and it shows we can compete against tough competition like Illinois or the competition at the Akron Invitational or when we travel to Puerto Rico."
ISU swimming and diving continues its season on Saturday as they take on Illinois at home, action starts at 12 pm.
