The Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development will host an information session Wednesday night focusing on how students can benefit from Peace Corps service.

The session will be held in the Student Services Building room 185. It is free and open to the public.

The presentation will feature several speakers, including Peace Corps recruiter Aimme Schattner and ISU graduate and Peace Corps volunteer Beverly Beyer.

Beyer is also the coordinator of the two graduate Peace Corps programs at ISU, the ISU Fellows/USA program, and the Master's International Program.

"It will be a general information presentation, Aimee Schattner will talk about what it's like to be involved in this life-changing experience," Beyer said. "Also I will be talking about the ways that you can combine Peace Corps service with graduate study."

In addition to showcasing all the pertinent information one would need to know about the Peace Corps, Schattner, Beyer and other returning Peace Corps volunteers will describe their experiences serving in the Peace Corps. The two programs available at ISU are productive for both students and the university, according to Peace Corps public affairs specialist Christine Torres.

"It's beneficial to students because it matches up their fields of study to specific skills that we know would be useful around the world in the Peace Corps," Torres explained. "Also it benefits the university because it allows them to attract highly motivated and highly ambitious graduate students, so it's a win-win situation."

Beyer echoed that sentiment, and added that the Peace Corps offers college graduates experience and opportunities they simply cannot receive anywhere else.

"After getting your Bachelor's degree if you go on to serve with Peace Corps you're going to have a lot more responsibility and autonomy than most people do in their first year in a job," Beyer said.

ISU has been on the cutting edge of Peace Corps recruiting at the college level. When the Fellows/USA program was first developed in 1994, it was the only one of its kind in the entire country. Additionally, ISU currently has the only Master's International Program focusing in Sociology in the nation.

"Peace Corps has a strong presence and connection here on campus, and I think it's important for students to know that this is one of the many options they will have as they think about what to do after leaving ISU," Beyer added.
