Graphic design majors are able to get a hands-on experience by working with the Design Streak Studio, an internship program that allows majors to participate in the design process.
"It runs as an internship which means students take it for internship credit but we run like a small design office. We provide graphic design services to small businesses, people on-campus and throughout Central Illinois," Julie Johnson, a professor in the School of Art, said.
The studio is located in the Center for Visual Arts room 205 and has been on-campus for over 20 years.
"It is a classroom that runs as an office. We have a room for clients to meet with us and a Web site. We go through the design process as a professional office would do, which is basically brainstorming about concepts and ideas and following it through with print or Web sites," Johnson said.
Design Streak has several accounts and does a lot of graphic design work for the School of Theatre.
"I started working with them last fall and I was extremely impressed with the quality of their work and so I am continuing to work with them. In the fall I directed "Hopeless Spinning" and I used them to design the poster," Janet Wilson, an assistant professor of theatre, said.
The studio has also done work for other campus and community events.
"We did the Town of Normal design logo, we have done some billboard work for Habitat for Humanity and we have done the "Vinegar Tom" and "Our Town" promotional items. We also did promotional work for the University Dance Theater which has a big concert in the spring every year," Johnson said.
A small fee is charged for graphic work to be done which helps the students do various supplemental activities.
"We do charge money as an office would and that money is used for field trips and guest speakers. We charge a nominal fee for the design work and the fee is mainly to get the experience of billing and budgeting and working with clients," Johnson said.
