Taking someone out for a date will not only improve one's social life now but it will also benefit the building of a new home.
The Public Relations Student Society of America has teamed up with Habitat for Humanity of McLean County to host a "Vegas Lights and Date Nights" date auction Wednesday, March 28 to raise money for Habitat's current project. Sophomore public relations major Ashley Cobert is the PRSSA account executive for this event and said the group brainstormed several ideas for a fundraiser.
"The idea that everyone seemed to end up liking the most and thought would raise the most money was a date auction," she said.
Twelve volunteers will be auctioned off and the bidding will begin at around $3. Several Bloomington-Normal businesses donated the dates that the couple will go on.
"We sent out donation letters to local restaurants and most of them were more than interested and said they'd love to help," Kelly Bols, a sophomore public relations major and event coordinator, said. "All of the proceeds are going to Habitat so it's a great cause."
Participating restaurants include Qdoba, Monical's Pizza, Hooter's and The Lucca Grill, among others. Throughout the night there will be entertainment featuring a DJ and both the Redline Express Dance Team and the Bloomington Extreme Dancers who will perform Las Vegas-type dance numbers.
"The night will be pretty casual and we'll have some tables set up so people can sit and play cards if they want," Cobert said.
Tickets for the event will be $3 in advance and $5 at the door. PRSSA will also be selling raffle tickets for a chance to win four VIP concert tickets to the concert of a student's choice for the summer 2007 Live Nation Concert Series.
Cobert said raffle tickets will be $1 for one ticket, $5 for seven and $10 for 20 tickets. The raffle is open to everyone in attendance, not just those bidding on a date.
Bruce Williams, the executive director for Habitat for Humanity McLean County, said he is excited about the fundraiser.
"We have a fantastic relationship with ISU and the Habitat group there," he said. "We're looking to increase our presence on campus and this event will offer a fun atmosphere to do that."
Williams said they are achieving goals beyond simply raising money by introducing people to Habitat and getting more students involved. He also recognized the effort and planning that has gone into the fundraiser.
"I applaud these students for their effort," Williams said.
The date auction will take place in the Circus Room of the Bone Student Center and will begin at 8 p.m. Cobert said they do not know how much money they will raise since this is a new event, but all of the proceeds will go to Habitat's current home-building project in the Woodbury Estates subdivision of Bloomington.
The house blessing will be Saturday, April 21 at noon. For more information visit habitatmclean.org.
